Meta expands calling capabilities to its browser-based platform, introducing one-on-one voice and video calls with end-to-end encryption and screen sharing, as the company moves closer to delivering a full-featured desktop-like experience online.
WhatsApp has started introducing voice and video calling support on its web platform, extending a feature that was previously limited to its Windows and macOS desktop applications. The rollout is currently available to select users enrolled in the beta version of WhatsApp Web.
The update marks a significant step in enhancing the browser-based experience, which until now primarily supported text messaging and media sharing. Users who have access to the new feature can place calls directly from individual chats by tapping the call icon within the conversation window. The service operates entirely within the web browser and does not require any additional software installation.
Initial rollout limited to individual calls
At this stage, the web version supports only one-on-one voice and video calls. Group calling functionality is still under development and is expected to be introduced in a future update. Reports suggest that Meta has spent several months refining web-based calling before making it available to beta testers.
The company has also confirmed that calls made via the browser maintain the same end-to-end encryption standards used on its mobile applications. This ensures that conversations remain private and accessible only to participants, reinforcing WhatsApp’s long-standing focus on user security.
Screen sharing and future enhancements
In addition to basic calling, WhatsApp Web now enables screen sharing during video calls. This feature is expected to support professional collaboration, remote troubleshooting and virtual meetings, bringing the web platform closer to parity with dedicated desktop apps.
While access remains limited to beta participants for now, Meta is likely to expand availability gradually over the coming weeks. Future updates are anticipated to include group calls for up to several participants, along with additional tools such as scheduled calls and shareable call links.
Users interested in early access can enrol in the beta programme through the Help and Feedback section within WhatsApp settings.
