The Elon Musk-owned platform has capped daily posts and replies for free users, saying the move is aimed at improving system stability and reducing platform overload during periods of heavy activity.
X has rolled out new posting restrictions for non-verified users, limiting free accounts to 50 original posts and 200 replies per day as part of efforts to improve platform reliability and reduce backend strain.
The platform, owned by Elon Musk, said the updated limits are designed to lower downtime, reduce system overload, and minimise technical issues during periods of high traffic. According to details shared on X’s Help Center, the restrictions apply across web, mobile applications, APIs, and third-party platforms connected to the service.
The move marks a significant shift from X’s earlier moderation strategy, which primarily focused on limiting specific content formats rather than restricting the number of daily posts users could publish.

New limits for free users
Under the revised rules, non-verified users can now send up to 500 direct messages per day, make 50 original posts, and post 200 replies daily. The company also introduced limits on account-related activities, including a cap of four email address changes per hour and a maximum of 400 follows per day.
X said the posting restrictions are divided into smaller time intervals throughout the day to help maintain system stability. Users who cross these thresholds may temporarily lose the ability to post until the waiting period resets.
The platform added that users following more than 5,000 accounts could face additional restrictions based on follower-to-following ratios and account activity patterns.
User complaints and subscription push
The changes come after several users reported difficulties posting on the platform over the past few days. Some users claimed their posts were automatically moved to drafts or flagged as suspicious activity after reaching the new limits.
Online discussions around the changes have also triggered criticism from users who believe the restrictions could encourage more people to subscribe to X Premium plans. Others argued that the tighter controls may reduce engagement for active users who rely heavily on the platform for real-time discussions and content sharing.
X currently offers multiple subscription tiers, including Basic, Premium, and Premium Plus plans, which provide additional features such as verification badges, reduced advertisements, analytics tools, long-form publishing options, and access to AI-powered Grok services.
The company said the limits may be adjusted further during periods of unusually high usage to ensure smoother platform performance.
