YouTube is soon going to roll out an artificial intelligence (AI) system for age estimation aimed at enhancing protections for underage users in the US. The video streaming platform will begin analyzing user activity and account details to predict the individual’s age. YouTube's AI technology will analyse indicators such as user video searches, viewed content categories to determine if a user is under 18 and subsequently, restrictions for teenagers will be automatically applied.
These indicators will include non-personalised advertising, limitations on video suggestions that are made on sensitive topics, and digital well-being tools such as screen time and bedtime reminders.
This AI-based age verification system is being implemented to address growing concerns about children's safety on YouTube and regulatory pressure. Over the past few years, the video streaming platform has taken several steps to ensure a safer experience for children. This includes the introduction of the YouTube Kids app and timely privacy reminders whenever teen users try to upload a video or comment on one.
YouTube has also acknowledged that AI-powered systems can make mistakes while classifying accounts based on these parameters. And hence, the company says that it will offer users other ways to verify their age.
Adults who have been incorrectly identified as minors or teens can provide the platform with a government ID card or a credit card to re-classify their account as an adult. Once the YouTube team verifies the submitted proof, the selected YouTube account will re-enable access to age-restricted videos.
