Microsoft could soon take a major step toward expanding the reach of Xbox Cloud Gaming by offering a free, ad-supported version of the service, according to a new report. The move would allow users to stream select Xbox titles over the internet without purchasing a Game Pass subscription, lowering the barrier to entry for console-quality gaming.
Xbox Cloud Gaming currently requires a paid Game Pass membership, enabling users to play games on smartphones, PCs, tablets, and smart TVs without owning an Xbox console. A free tier would mark a significant shift in strategy, opening the platform to a much wider audience.
Ad-supported access without Game Pass
According to a report by Windows Central, Microsoft is internally testing a free Xbox Cloud Gaming option that would rely on advertisements and place limits on gameplay sessions. While details remain scarce, the version is expected to offer restricted access compared to the paid service, including shorter playtimes and fewer features.
The report suggests that users may still experience core cloud gaming functionality, but with clear trade-offs designed to encourage upgrades to premium plans.
