Breaking News
OpenAI is reportedly on track to unveil its first hardware device in the second half of 2026, according to Chief Global Affairs Officer Chris Lehane. The announcement was made during Axios House Davos, where Lehane discussed the company’s upcoming plans but provided few specifics about the product.
The device is expected to be part of OpenAI’s broader strategy to expand AI beyond software, following CEO Sam Altman’s earlier hints. Since acquiring former Apple design Chief Jony Ive’s company last May, OpenAI has teased the development of a “peaceful” AI device, distinct from smartphones and designed for simplicity. A promotional video from Ive’s company, previously known as io, also indicated a potential 2026 unveiling.
Early Speculation and Market Context
Reports suggest that OpenAI is developing small, screenless prototypes, possibly wearables that interact with users in innovative ways. Lehane did not confirm whether the device would take the form of an earpiece, pin, or another form factor, noting only that OpenAI would share more details “much later in the year.” While a launch in late 2026 is considered likely, the timeline is not yet fixed.
The move comes as the market for AI-enabled gadgets is beginning to expand. Early devices such as Human’s AI Pin have struggled commercially, but analysts expect 2026 to see a surge in new AI hardware. Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon highlighted that around 10 million AI-equipped glasses ship annually, with numbers potentially reaching 100 million within a year or two. AI devices are expected to take multiple forms, including earbuds with cameras, wearable jewellery, and smart glasses, the latter likely being the largest category by volume.
Strategic Partnerships and Future Outlook
While it remains unclear whether Qualcomm chips will power OpenAI’s device, Amon confirmed that the company has been collaborating with OpenAI on hardware development. Lehane emphasized that OpenAI views devices as a major focus area for the coming year, even as the company continues to refine its AI software offerings.
The unveiling of OpenAI’s first device is being closely watched as the industry anticipates a new wave of AI-enabled consumer electronics. Analysts suggest that a well-executed launch could reshape the wearable and AI device landscape, offering a new interface for users beyond traditional screens and keyboards.
