The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has released a new policy to regulate data sharing from the National Transport Repository (NTR). The NTR serves as India's central transport data hub, integrating information from key platforms like Vahan (vehicle registration), Sarathi (driver licenses), eChallan, eDAR (accident reports), and FASTag.
This new framework formalizes a previously unregulated process, providing a unified legal and procedural guide for handling data requests. The policy aims to ensure uniformity and security while balancing the need for data-driven development with citizen privacy.
The policy mandates that all data requests, whether from government agencies, academic institutions, or private entities, must follow a structured approval process. This is especially critical as the NTR contains sensitive personal information for over 390 million vehicles and 220 million drivers.
Emphasizing alignment with the Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act, the policy stresses that data sharing will be strictly limited to lawful, approved purposes. This move reflects the government’s commitment to enabling "ease of doing business" and "ease of living" while upholding the privacy and rights of its citizens. The framework aims to promote data-driven innovation while preventing misuse.
