According to a research cited by the Ministry of Communications, the number of internet users in India increased significantly from 88.1 crore in March 2023 to 95.4 crore by March 2024, representing a noteworthy 7.3 crore additional customers. This indicates an 8.30% yearly growth rate. With the number of customers rising from 84.6 crore to 92.4 crore, broadband services played a significant role in this growth.
The latest annual report from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) highlights significant advancements in the sector over the past year.
Overall tele-density, which measures the proportion of telephone connections in the population, improved from 84.51% to 85.69%. The number of telephone subscribers also grew from 117.2 crore to 119.9 crore, representing a 2.3% increase.
Data usage experienced substantial growth, with wireless data subscribers rising from 84.6 crore to 91.3 crore. The total volume of wireless data used jumped from 1,60,054 petabytes (PB) to 1,94,774 PB, reflecting a significant increase of 21.69%.
Additionally, average monthly minutes of usage per subscriber rose from 919 to 963 minutes. The Adjusted Gross Revenue (AGR) for the telecom sector also saw a rise, growing from Rs 2,49,908 crore to Rs 2,70,504 crore, marking an 8.24% increase.
