Meta reportedly in talks to sell computing power to Anthropic

Meta Platforms is said to be in early discussions to lease computing power from its data centers to Anthropic PBC, an arrangement that could be worth as much as $10 billion over two years. Meta has been developing plans for a cloud computing business, including the possibility of leasing computing capacity to other companies.

According to Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg, Meta has been getting lucrative offers for computing power that have made him consider renting it instead.

“The offers that you get for using the compute are so high that it may make sense, in some cases, to rent out or consider those kind of deals instead of your own internal uses,” Zuckerberg said.

Such a deal would help Meta diversify beyond advertising by generating revenue from its infrastructure ⁠and competing with neocloud firms such as CoreWeave and Nebius, as growing adoption of advanced AI tools boosts the need for computing capacity.

Meta shares, which were down nearly 6% earlier in the day, jumped up on the news and were trading down roughly 3.5% at 12:35 p.m. in New York. Meta didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment on the report.

IPO-bound Anthropic had proposed the deal in June and Meta is considering it, the source said, adding that the talks have become complicated since Meta does not have a business ‌selling ⁠its computing power.
