An employee of a major BPO firm in Gurugram recently shared a troubling experience after his company demanded extensive medical evidence—including both an X-ray and an MRI scan—to approve his sick leave. Despite having unused casual and sick leave, his request was repeatedly denied.
The employee posted on the Indian Workplace forum, explaining that he had planned his leave carefully to attend therapy sessions for lingering injuries from a previous accident. However, he was shocked when his employer insisted on high-level diagnostic tests, even though nerve pain and inflammation typically do not require X-rays or MRIs as proof.
He questioned the rationale behind such invasive requirements and described the company’s stance as unreasonable and insensitive to the nature of his condition.
What frustrated him further was that his leave balance remained intact, yet the approval was withheld without valid justification. According to him, this reflects a larger problem across many Indian corporate workplaces—rigid policies and a lack of empathy toward employee well-being.
The situation escalated when, as he claims, the employer offered a compromise: his leave would be approved only if he agreed to surrender half of his remaining sick and casual leave. To the employee, this clearly signaled that the organization valued continuous staffing over compassion, pressuring workers to leave their entitled benefits unused.
The post has since sparked discussion on employer overreach, unhealthy work cultures, and the need for stronger employee protections in India’s corporate sector.
