AMD sees sign of Faith in India

Just seven months old in the company, the new CEO, Rory Read, visited India along with the entire eight-member AMD Executive Team (AET). AET comprises of the group of senior executives that drive strategy and operations at the $7billion chip-maker. India was the first country, where AET was meeting outside North America.

Read's enthusiasm has to do with the fact AMD's sales grew 36% in India, six times that of industry average. Read is hopeful of doing even more this year. He said, “I see a huge opportunity here."

He visited the IT hub of the capital and his visit proved his point that one of the topmost priority for AMD is to regain customer trust that it apparently lost on account of few recent contract drops. Out of which the most critical was where Apple was considering an AMD chip for its ultra-thin laptop called Mac Book Air. This would have given AMD an edge over its competitors. It could not happen because of the production constraints at AMD facilities.

Following the Delhi meet, Read held a town-hall meeting in Bangalore where 800 engineers took part. These company's moves are so nicely timed where market had been wondering for a few quarters about AMDs game-plan to survive the intense competition. But with a new chief at the helm, the market is beginning to feel the difference.
