Anthropic has demonstrated how Claude Code can accelerate legacy system modernization by transforming mainframe COBOL applications into modern Java architectures. Using an AWS Mainframe Modernization demo environment, the AI agent analyzes complex business logic, system dependencies, and data flows before refactoring the application—while preserving original functionality.
Unlike traditional migration projects that require large engineering teams and extended timelines, Claude Code operates directly from the terminal, handling multi-step workflows autonomously. It generates structured documentation, creates migration roadmaps, writes test suites, and iteratively validates the refactored code to ensure parity with the legacy system.
Mainframe modernization has historically been slow, expensive, and high-risk due to tightly coupled logic and decades-old documentation gaps. By reasoning through code contextually rather than relying on rule-based translation, Claude Code reduces manual intervention and accelerates transformation cycles.
This signals a broader shift: AI is moving beyond code assistance into full lifecycle engineering support. If scalable in production environments, such agentic systems could significantly lower the cost and risk of enterprise legacy modernization—one of the largest untapped digital transformation opportunities globally.
