Fujifilm’s phased investment will support Tata Electronics’ Dholera semiconductor fab by localising critical materials and high-purity chemicals, while bringing Japanese manufacturing expertise and helping strengthen India’s domestic semiconductor supply chain and capabilities.

Japanese technology major Fujifilm will invest around Rs 800 crore to set up a semiconductor materials manufacturing facility at Gujarat’s Dholera Special Investment Region (DSIR), strengthening the supply chain supporting Tata Electronics’ upcoming chip fabrication plant.

The investment is part of a strategic partnership between Fujifilm and Tata Electronics, with the companies signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on Thursday (September 17). The planned facility will be developed in phases and is intended to provide a local source of materials required for semiconductor manufacturing at Tata Electronics’ 300 mm fabrication facility.

The agreement comes as India works to establish a broader domestic semiconductor ecosystem spanning materials, specialty chemicals, equipment, wafer fabrication and advanced packaging. Tata Electronics has been announcing multiple partnerships around Semicon India 2026 as it builds capabilities across different segments of the chip manufacturing value chain.

Localising semiconductor materials

Under the collaboration, Fujifilm and Tata Electronics will explore the localisation of critical raw materials required for semiconductor fabrication. The partnership will also support Indian chemical manufacturers in developing capabilities to produce high-purity chemicals suitable for semiconductor applications.

Fujifilm will contribute its technology expertise, quality assurance capabilities and manufacturing process know-how to the initiative. The Japanese company has a semiconductor materials portfolio serving different stages of chip production and operates manufacturing facilities across Japan, the United States, Europe and Asia.

"Tata Electronics is committed to building a resilient, world-class semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem in India," Randhir Thakur, CEO and managing director of Tata Electronics, said in a statement.

He added that the partnership would strengthen the materials supply chain for the Dholera fab while contributing to the wider development of India’s semiconductor ecosystem.

Fujifilm Holdings CEO Teiichi Goto said India’s expanding semiconductor market presents an opportunity for the company to grow its semiconductor materials business. He added that Fujifilm’s portfolio covering both front-end and back-end semiconductor manufacturing could support the development of India’s chip industry.

Supporting Tata Electronics’ Dholera fab

Tata Electronics is investing Rs 91,000 crore, equivalent to around $11 billion, to develop its semiconductor fabrication facility at Dholera. The fab is being developed in partnership with Taiwan’s Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (PSMC) and is planned to manufacture chips using technology nodes ranging from 28nm to 110nm.

The facility is expected to serve several industries, including automotive, consumer electronics, computing and data storage, wireless communications and artificial intelligence. According to Tata Electronics, the fab is designed for a monthly production capacity of 50,000 wafers covering analog and logic integrated circuits.

Fujifilm’s planned investment will add a supporting manufacturing base near the fabrication facility, with the objective of improving access to semiconductor-grade materials and reducing dependence on imports. It could also help develop domestic capabilities among Indian chemical manufacturers.

The agreement forms part of Tata Electronics’ broader partnership activity around Semicon India 2026. The company has also entered into an agreement with Dutch semiconductor company Nexperia covering wafer fabrication as well as assembly and testing. Other collaborations announced during the event have focused on advanced packaging, localisation and talent development.

The Fujifilm partnership therefore extends Tata Electronics’ efforts beyond chip fabrication into the supporting materials ecosystem required to establish a more integrated semiconductor manufacturing base in India.
