Google quietly links phone numbers across multiple Android accounts

Google’s automatic phone number verification feature on Android is raising privacy concerns by associating users’ phone numbers with multiple accounts on the same device. The default setting has prompted questions about consent and control over personal information.

Google is facing privacy concerns over an Android feature that can link a user’s phone number to multiple Google accounts signed in on the same device, including secondary and work accounts. The issue has come to light after users reported receiving unexpected emails confirming that their phone numbers had been verified, without their explicit approval for each account.

The feature could affect people who deliberately maintain separate personal, professional and alternate Google accounts. While the process is intended to improve the functioning of Google services, users may not realise that their phone numbers are being associated with accounts they intended to keep separate.

Why the feature is raising privacy concerns

According to Google’s official documentation, Android allows Google and mobile carriers to verify phone numbers automatically at regular intervals. This helps support services such as account recovery, RCS messaging, emergency-related features and Quick Share.

However, the automatic process can also associate a phone number with other Google accounts signed in on the same device. For users who maintain separate digital identities, this raises concerns about privacy, transparency and the extent of their control over personal contact information.

Some users have reported the issue on Reddit, sharing their experiences of receiving verification emails from Google. Others have questioned why the process takes place automatically rather than requiring users to approve the association.

Reports have also suggested that the automatic verification setting may turn itself back on for some users after being disabled. Google has not publicly clarified the reasons behind the default setting or indicated whether it plans to change the feature.

How users can check their settings

Android users can review the setting by navigating to Settings > Google > All services > Phone number verification and turning off “Verify phone numbers automatically”. Menu names may vary slightly depending on the device.

However, disabling automatic verification does not remove phone numbers already linked to individual Google accounts. To address existing associations, users need to visit their Google Account’s Personal Info section, select Contact info, open Phone and remove the number from accounts where they do not want it listed.

The issue highlights the challenge of balancing convenience with user privacy. Although automatic verification can help Google services work smoothly, users may reasonably expect greater transparency when their contact details are associated with multiple accounts. Until further clarification is available, users who want to maintain separate digital identities should review both their verification settings and the phone numbers listed across their Google accounts.
