The new feature allows users to edit photos using simple voice or text prompts, supports multiple Indian languages, and introduces content credentials to clearly identify AI-modified images.
Google has officially started rolling out its artificial intelligence-powered photo editing feature in Google Photos to users in India, expanding access to a capability that was first introduced in the US alongside the Pixel 10 launch last year. The rollout also covers other markets including Australia and Japan, marking a broader international expansion of Google’s AI-led consumer tools.
The new feature is designed to simplify photo editing by allowing users to describe desired changes using everyday language. Instead of manually adjusting sliders or tools, users can now rely on AI to interpret prompts and apply edits automatically, reducing the time and effort needed to enhance images.
How the ‘Help Me Edit’ feature works
Indian users updating to the latest version of Google Photos will see a new option titled “Help me edit” when editing a photo. By tapping the feature, users can request changes using text or voice prompts, such as removing accessories, opening closed eyes, adjusting facial expressions, or refining background elements.
Google stated that the feature leverages Gemini AI along with private face groups stored on the device to deliver more accurate and personalised edits. The company emphasised that personal images used for editing remain private and are not shared publicly.
In addition, the AI editing tool supports multiple Indian languages, including Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, Bengali, Gujarati and English, making the feature accessible to a wider user base across the country.
Focus on transparency and responsible AI use
To address growing concerns around AI-generated content, Google is integrating C2PA Content Credentials into Google Photos. These credentials attach a permanent digital label to edited images, clearly indicating that AI tools were used and preserving details about the image’s modification history.
The rollout follows recent AI-based additions to Google Photos, including meme-creation tools and preset style templates powered by advanced on-device models. Together, these features reflect Google’s broader strategy to embed generative AI into everyday consumer experiences while maintaining safeguards around transparency.
The AI editing feature is available to users running Android 8.0 or higher with at least 4GB of RAM, ensuring compatibility across a wide range of devices in the Indian market.
