Today, the need for data storage capacity is constantly increasing. Consumers want maximum storage capacity in the smallest medium. With this trend, Blu-ray will definitely take shape in the market. The higher capacity, additional features and transparent content protection of Blu-ray discs will meet industry needs for at least the next decade. With the technology offering a memory capacity of 50GB, it is well positioned to emerge early as the dominant next-generation removable optical storage technology.
The software consortium is not very much developed in the Indian market and the hardware is very expensive. The Blu-ray technology has to create its own market first, but definitely it has a nascent market in India. The market growth will be dependent on the software availability by studios like Sony, Fox and Universal.
According to R. Manikandan, Business Group Head, IT Division, LG, “The standard format in the future time would definitely be the Blu-ray. Blu-ray is a next-generation optical disc format meant for storage of high-definition video and high-density data. Indian customers today demand the latest technology and we are providing it to them as it happens. We are sure that the Blu-ray device will be creating a niche segment for them in the Indian market.
Keeping in mind the upcoming tech-savvy Indian consumer, LG aspires to create new paradigms with the introduction of Blu-ray technology.”
He added, “We plan to tap this market through second-generation SMB players, which will be cost-effective, and is an interactive HD format.”
The Blu-ray technology offers a quantum jump in external media-based space storage devices, with 1 disc having a memory capacity of 50GB. This will be attractive to both corporate segment and the home segment, as a very convenient option to store their data and entertainment software. In addition to the above, the product is very competitively priced for a storage capacity of 50GB.
Also all major Hollywood production houses are tying up with Sony for Blu-ray production and distribution of movies. Even some production houses have de-contracted from HD-DVD Consortium and joined hands with Sony. This is the main reason for which Blu-ray seems to be the future format for all technology-leading players.
