The new AI-powered coding assistant focuses on end-to-end software engineering, flexible pricing and enterprise-ready capabilities as Meta expands its push into developer tools and advanced AI services.
Meta has launched Muse Code, its first artificial intelligence-powered coding agent, marking a significant step in its strategy to strengthen its position in the rapidly evolving AI software development market. The new offering places the company in direct competition with established AI coding assistants from OpenAI and Anthropic, as demand for AI-driven programming tools continues to rise among enterprises and developers.
The announcement forms part of Meta's broader effort to expand its artificial intelligence portfolio under Meta Superintelligence Labs, the division responsible for the company's advanced AI research and foundation models. The initiative is being spearheaded by Chief AI Officer Alexandr Wang, who joined Meta to accelerate its AI roadmap and strengthen its competitiveness in the global AI landscape.
Muse Code is currently available in a preview version and has been designed to assist developers with a wide range of software engineering tasks. According to Wang, the AI agent can help plan development work, generate code, validate outputs and support end-to-end programming workflows through a single interface.
AI coding platform targets developers and enterprises
The coding assistant works alongside Muse Spark 1.2, Meta's latest AI model, which was developed and trained in parallel with Muse Code to improve coding accuracy and performance. The integration is intended to deliver a more efficient software development experience while supporting complex engineering projects.
Meta said the platform also enables developers to coordinate multiple AI-powered agents within a unified environment, simplifying application development and software management. This approach mirrors an industry trend in which AI assistants are increasingly taking on broader engineering responsibilities rather than serving only as code-generation tools.
Developers will be able to access Muse Code through Meta's developer platform using a pay-as-you-go pricing model. The company is also introducing a lower-cost contributor tier that allows users to access the service at a substantially reduced price in exchange for permitting their usage data to help improve the underlying AI models.
Cost, flexibility drive Meta's AI strategy
Rather than competing solely on model performance, Meta is positioning Muse Code as a more affordable alternative to rival coding assistants. The company believes pricing flexibility could help attract startups, independent developers and enterprises seeking AI-powered software engineering tools without significantly increasing operational costs.
Meta is also expanding deployment options for enterprise customers by introducing support for zero-data retention, allowing organisations to use the platform without their development data being stored for future model training. The feature is expected to appeal to businesses with strict data privacy and compliance requirements.
In addition, Muse Spark 1.2 will be accessible through both Meta's developer portal and the OpenRouter platform, broadening availability for developers using multiple AI ecosystems.
The launch comes as Meta continues investing heavily in artificial intelligence infrastructure, including data centres and computing capacity, while exploring new revenue streams beyond its core advertising business. With Muse Code, the company is seeking to establish a stronger foothold in enterprise AI, where intelligent coding assistants are emerging as one of the fastest-growing application areas.
