Qatar's Revenue Crisis Deepens

Qatar's economic crisis is intensifying, with government revenues plunging 42% during the first half of 2026, according to Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Emir of Qatar, highlighting the financial consequences of regional conflict.

The sharp decline follows disruptions to LNG exports caused by the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and damage to energy infrastructure at Ras Laffan Industrial City.

Government revenues reportedly totalled QR 63.4 billion, comprising QR 37.8 billion in the first quarter and QR 25.6 billion in the second quarter.

Fiscal pressures intensified as Qatar recorded budget deficits of QR 10.3 billion in Q1 and QR 21.2 billion in Q2, reflecting declining energy earnings.

Public expenditure fell 14%, although authorities maintained commitments to essential services and strategic development priorities.

For India, a major importer of Qatari LNG, prolonged disruptions could increase energy costs, affecting fertilisers, manufacturing and industrial competitiveness.

The crisis underscores the urgency of energy diversification, strategic reserves and stronger supply-chain resilience. Governments must prepare for prolonged geopolitical uncertainty rather than depend on uninterrupted energy imports.
