Actor reports extortion threat sent via WhatsApp as police step up security at his residence and investigate possible links to a criminal gang amid ongoing probe into firing incident at filmmaker Rohit Shetty’s home.
Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh has approached Mumbai Police after receiving a threatening voice message on WhatsApp allegedly demanding a large sum of money. Following the complaint, security has been increased outside his residence as authorities begin efforts to trace the sender.
According to police sources, the individual behind the message claimed links to the Lawrence Bishnoi gang. Investigators are verifying the authenticity of the claim while examining technical details to identify the origin of the voice note. Officials confirmed that the matter is being treated seriously given recent security concerns involving members of the film industry.
Investigation underway
The development comes close on the heels of a firing incident outside filmmaker Rohit Shetty’s residence in Juhu, which is currently under investigation by the Mumbai Crime Branch. In that case, five suspects have been arrested, while an alleged gang member has been named as a wanted accused.
Police said the shooter used a country-made firearm and discharged multiple rounds of 7.62 mm ammunition. Forensic teams are conducting ballistic analysis to determine the exact specifications of the weapon and ammunition used. Investigators suspect that more individuals may have been involved and are examining financial transactions, digital trails, and witness statements as part of the broader probe.
Heightened vigilance in film fraternity
Authorities have increased vigilance around high-profile personalities in the wake of these incidents. While there is no immediate confirmation of a direct link between the threat to Singh and the firing case, officials are exploring all possible connections.
Ranveer Singh was recently seen in the spy thriller Dhurandhar, which performed strongly at the box office. A sequel to the film is scheduled for release later this year.
Police have assured that appropriate action will be taken once the sender of the threat is identified.
