A CEO of a major bank recently voiced his concerns about Anthropic's Mythos model, emphasizing a growing fear in the financial sector: while banks operate at human speed, AI-powered attackers function at machine speed. This disparity marks a significant challenge that many boardrooms are hesitant to confront.
For the past decade, cybersecurity has largely been treated as an audit problem, with institutions adhering to frameworks like ISO 27001, SOC 2, and various regulatory guidelines. Each framework serves as a checklist filled with deadlines and management responses, consuming the time and focus of security teams. However, threat actors do not follow checklists; they act swiftly and without the need for management approval or compliance checks.
In response, many Indian financial institutions are hiring junior Chief Information Security Officers (CISOs) to satisfy regulatory requirements. For example, a listed non-banking financial company is seeking a CISO with just five years of experience to manage complex security programs and compliance responsibilities. This approach fails to provide true leadership in cybersecurity and merely creates scapegoats for accountability.
As AI technologies evolve, the urgency for competent cybersecurity leadership becomes critical. To effectively counter AI-driven threats like Mythos, boards must take two essential steps: first, they must stop hiring inexperienced CISOs who lack the necessary skills; instead, they should invest in seasoned leaders who can navigate complex security landscapes. Second, organizations need to develop internal AI capabilities for threat detection and analysis rather than allowing attackers to leverage these advanced tools uncontested.
Cybersecurity is not merely an audit exercise; it requires strategic foresight and proactive measures. If a CISO's job description does not emphasize board reporting, leadership experience, and the mandate for AI defense, organizations risk hiring ineffective leaders who cannot adequately protect against the sophisticated threats posed by AI-driven adversaries.
