Tata Consultancy Services has launched what it describes as India’s first lights-out factory lab at its Sahyadri Park campus in Pune, bringing together digital twins, robotics and industrial AI to demonstrate increasingly autonomous manufacturing operations.
Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has launched the TCS Industrial Autonomy & Engineering Lab – Lights-Out Factory at its Sahyadri Park campus in Pune. The facility has been created as a controlled environment where manufacturers can explore and validate technologies designed to reduce human intervention across industrial production processes.
The lab combines digital twins, robotics, industrial artificial intelligence, factory control systems and real-time operational intelligence. Its objective is to demonstrate how an assembly line can function with minimal human involvement while allowing manufacturers to evaluate technologies before introducing them into live production environments.
Robotic assembly line at the core
A fully robotic battery pack assembly line forms the centrepiece of the facility. The live production setup features multiple stages of assembly and is intended to provide manufacturers with a platform to prototype, test and scale AI-led production systems.
Through the lab, manufacturers can assess potential applications of Industry 4.0, AI and robotics in a controlled setting, helping them identify operational challenges and reduce deployment risks. The facility supports use cases including predictive maintenance, automated quality inspection, real-time process optimisation, human-machine collaboration and autonomous factory operations.
Beyond the robotic production line, the facility incorporates digital twin and simulation environments, Vision AI, industrial automation, sensor-to-cloud intelligence and software-defined engineering. These capabilities are intended to provide a broader view of how connected technologies can interact across different layers of a modern manufacturing environment.
Expanding industrial autonomy capabilities
Sreenivasa Chakravarti, Global Head & Vice President of Industrial Autonomy and Engineering, TCS, said, “At TCS, we are reimagining those environments and building factories for the future.”

The initiative also brings an industry perspective through SKF. The Pune facility builds on TCS’ broader focus on industrial autonomy and physical AI. Earlier this year, the company launched the TCS Industrial Autonomy & Engineering Lab Powered by NVIDIA in Bengaluru, focusing on Physical AI applications across industrial and mobility sectors.
With the new Pune facility, TCS is providing manufacturers with a physical environment to experiment with autonomous production technologies, bridge simulation with real-world operations and evaluate AI and robotics use cases before potential factory deployment.
