AI Agents Have an Identity Problem

Enterprises are deploying AI agents at a pace that is rapidly outrunning their ability to govern them. Unlike human employees, AI agents operate autonomously, execute multi-step tasks, access sensitive systems, and make decisions — often without a single human reviewing what they are doing in real time. Every one of those agents carries an identity, holds permissions, and represents a potential attack surface. Most organisations have no clear picture of how many agents are running inside their environment at any given moment.

The identity security frameworks enterprises have relied on for decades were built for humans and static applications. AI agents are neither. They are dynamic, ephemeral, and capable of acquiring permissions far beyond what their original deployment required. Traditional identity governance tools simply were not designed to track, audit, or revoke agent access at the speed and scale this new environment demands.

The threat is not theoretical. Attackers are already probing agent pipelines for privilege escalation opportunities — using compromised agent identities to move laterally across enterprise systems in ways that bypass conventional detection. An agent with overprivileged access and no lifecycle management is, in security terms, an open door with no one watching it.

The solution requires three things to happen simultaneously: visibility into every agent identity across the enterprise, governance frameworks that define what agents can and cannot do, and lifecycle management that deactivates agents when their function ends. None of these are optional extras — they are the foundational requirements of a security posture fit for the agentic era.

Agent governance is not a future problem. It is a present one, and the window to get ahead of it is narrowing fast. Organisations that treat AI agent identity with the same rigour they apply to human identity management will be significantly better positioned. Those that do not are already exposed — whether they know it yet or not.
