“The buzz surrounding Android is providing the smartphone and feature phone market with new impetus, and we feel it is important to help bring Android within the reach of more consumers and whole new markets by delivering powerful yet highly affordable 3G chipsets and reference designs to handset OEMs that leverage the functionality and usability of Android,” said Ker Chang, CEO of VIA Telecom. “Joining the Open Handset Alliance provides us with this opportunity to help shape the mobile communications and entertainment market of the future.”
Developed by the Open Handset Alliance (OHA), Android is the first free and open mobile platform. It includes everything a manufacturer or an operator needs to build a mobile phone, including an operating system, middleware and key mobile applications. By contributing to the Android platform, VIA Telecom is helping to make it easier for developers to distribute and commercialize their applications.
