Apple’s Foldable iPhone May Lack Face ID, Telephoto Camera and More

Apple’s first foldable iPhone may significantly differ from the upcoming iPhone 18 Pro models. The device has been referred to as the iPhone Fold or iPhone Ultra in reports and is expected to adopt a foldable form factor.

Apple has yet to officially confirm plans for a foldable iPhone. However, reports have revealed potential details about the device, including its display sizes, biometric technology, camera setup and connectivity. The foldable iPhone is also rumoured to carry a price tag of more than $2,000.

One of the biggest changes could be the removal of Face ID. The foldable iPhone is reportedly expected to measure around 4.5mm thick when unfolded, potentially leaving insufficient internal space for the TrueDepth hardware required for Face ID.

Apple could instead bring back Touch ID, with the fingerprint sensor integrated into the side-mounted power button. The approach would be similar to the biometric system used on some iPad models.

The foldable iPhone could also feature a simpler rear-camera setup compared with the iPhone 18 Pro models.

According to reports based on leaked dummy units, the device may include a 48MP primary camera and a 48MP ultrawide camera, without a dedicated telephoto lens. This would give the foldable fewer dedicated camera focal lengths than the Pro models, which are expected to retain a more advanced multi-camera system.

It is reported that Apple’s foldable iPhone could feature a 5.5-inch outer display and a 7.8-inch internal screen. The outer display would handle conventional smartphone tasks, while the larger inner screen could offer more space for apps, video consumption and multitasking.

Apple is also reportedly working to minimise the visibility of the display crease. Earlier reports suggested that the company is testing a liquid-metal hinge, which could improve durability while helping reduce the appearance of the crease.

Despite the device’s slim and compact form factor, MagSafe is reportedly expected to remain part of the foldable iPhone.

Leaked dummy units have also pointed to a potentially unusual button arrangement. The volume controls could reportedly move to the top edge of the device, while the left side may feature few or no physical controls. The layout could be driven by the internal component arrangement, although Apple has not confirmed these details.

The foldable iPhone is also expected to adopt an eSIM-only design, with reports suggesting that Apple could eliminate the physical SIM slot.

The device may also lack mmWave 5G, potentially because of Apple’s rumoured C2 modem. In contrast, the US versions of the iPhone 18 Pro models are reportedly expected to continue using Qualcomm modems, which support mmWave connectivity.
