Apple is reportedly in discussions with Anthropic and OpenAI to upgrade Siri using their powerful AI models like Claude and ChatGPT, according to Bloomberg. This move could mark a major shift from Apple’s current in-house AI technology, known as Apple Foundation Models, as the company explores ways to make Siri smarter and more helpful.
As per the report, Apple has tested AI models from multiple companies, including Google’s Gemini, to see which one would best improve Siri’s performance. The internal team, led by Apple’s senior VP John Giannandrea and recently joined by former Google AI chief John Rockwell, conducted several rounds of tests.
Early results showed that Claude, developed by Anthropic, performed better than others for Siri’s needs. However, Apple and Anthropic reportedly ran into financial disagreements, which may cause Apple to shift its focus to OpenAI’s ChatGPT or explore other partnerships.
Apple had initially planned to roll out its upgraded Siri using in-house AI by 2026, but this latest development suggests that it may speed up Siri’s evolution by using third-party models to bring ChatGPT-like features to iPhones and iPads sooner. If finalized, this could be the biggest upgrade for Siri yet, giving it advanced conversational abilities and making it more competitive in the AI assistant race.
