After the massive success of its two flagship stores in Delhi and Mumbai, Apple is planning new retail stores in the near future. In April 2023, Apple opened its first store in India at BKC in Mumbai, which was followed by another store a day later at Saket in New Delhi. Apple has also announced that it is now manufacturing the entire iPhone 16 lineup, including iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max, in India.
This marks a huge shift in Apple’s strategy as it strengthens its ties with the country, both as a booming consumer market and a manufacturing hub.
The new stores will open in Bengaluru, Pune, Delhi-NCR region and Mumbai.
It is reported that the rapid expansion strategy comes after both the stores contributed majorly to Apple’s revenue in India. As per analysts, Delhi and Mumbai alone contributed more than a fifth of Apple’s revenue in the country. It’s clear that India’s growing appetite for luxury gadgets is driving this retail expansion.
Apple is now manufacturing the entire iPhone 16 lineup in India, including the premium iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max. This marks a significant milestone for both Apple and India. Previously, Apple only produced older iPhone models in the country, but they have now expanded production to include their latest and most high-end devices.
The report also revealed that Apple is forging partnership with Foxconn, Pegatron, and Tata Electronics to make these devices. Foxconn is manufacturing iPhone 16, 16 Plus, and Pro Max models whereas Pegatron is handling the iPhone 16 and 16 Pro. Tata Electronics will also be making the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus models. The handsets manufactured in India will not only be sold in the country but also exported to other countries.
This shift is a major milestone, especially as Apple moves more of its manufacturing out of China and into countries like India. The fact that Apple’s most expensive iPhones are now being made in India shows just how serious they are about using the country as a long-term manufacturing hub.
Deirdre O’Brien, Apple’s senior vice-president of retail, told a news source that the company is “thrilled” to expand further into the Indian market. “We’re inspired by the creativity and passion of our customers across this country,” she said. Apple sees its stores as more than just places to shop – they want them to be spaces where people can explore Apple’s products and get expert advice from their team members.
