Intending to boost cost efficiency as well as competitiveness, the chip maker Intel is reportedly working on a new chip manufacturing technology for smartphones and tablets.
At an industry conference in San Francisco, an Intel spokesperson stated that the company is deliberately working on its technology for making SoCs or "systems-on-a-chip" with features measuring 22 nanometers. It is important to note that Intel already makes PC processors at 22 nm, but SoCs will make processor chips smarter and smaller.
SoC chips equipped with advanced features facilitate better performance and improved efficiency.
Presently, Intel is manufacturing its mobile SoCs at 32 nm. On the other hand, other chip makers including Qualcomm and Nvidia make their top-end SoCs at 28 nm and 40 nm technology.
According to an estimate, Intel's 22 nm SoC technology chips would be ready for high volume manufacturing in 2013.
Seems, Intel is on the way to launch a new generation of chips for mobile devices including smartphones and tablets.
