The reported plans reflect growing industry interest in low earth orbit satellite networks, which are increasingly viewed as critical for expanding broadband access, improving rural connectivity and strengthening future digital infrastructure capabilities.
Reliance Industries is reportedly preparing a large-scale entry into the satellite communications sector, with plans to invest heavily in low earth orbit (LEO) satellite technology as competition intensifies in the global broadband connectivity market.
According to reports, the initiative will be led through Jio Platforms, the company’s digital and telecom arm, which is expected to spearhead Reliance’s ambitions in space-based internet services. The move could place the conglomerate in direct competition with global players such as Starlink, Project Kuiper and Eutelsat OneWeb.
Industry reports suggest Reliance is evaluating multiple strategies to accelerate its satellite ambitions, including both in-house development and potential acquisitions. The company is believed to be exploring ways to create a domestic satellite network capable of supporting broadband access across India, particularly in underserved and remote regions.
Multiple teams formed for satellite initiative
As part of the reported expansion, Reliance has assembled several dedicated teams to focus on different aspects of the satellite ecosystem, including satellite manufacturing, launch systems, payload technology and user terminal development.
The project is said to be receiving direct attention from Mukesh Ambani along with senior leadership from Jio Platforms and Reliance’s technology divisions. Reports also indicate that discussions have begun with India’s Department of Telecommunications regarding orbital slot applications at the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), a critical requirement for satellite deployment.
LEO satellites orbit significantly closer to Earth than traditional communication satellites, allowing lower latency and faster internet connectivity. The technology is increasingly being viewed as essential for expanding broadband coverage in rural areas and improving communication resilience.
India’s satellite race gathers momentum
The reported plans come at a time when countries and corporations worldwide are investing aggressively in satellite constellations to secure future digital infrastructure capabilities. Governments are also viewing satellite communications as strategically important for national connectivity and technological independence.
Reliance is reportedly assessing opportunities to acquire companies with existing orbital rights or satellite infrastructure, which could help accelerate deployment timelines. The company already maintains a partnership with satellite operator SES for medium earth orbit communication services.
Although the project remains in the exploratory stage, reports suggest Reliance could target operational LEO satellite services within the next few years. The development highlights the growing importance of satellite internet in India’s digital expansion strategy as telecom, technology and global space firms compete for a share of the country’s rapidly evolving connectivity market.
