Messaging platform WhatsApp is working on a new feature that could significantly improve multitasking for Android users by introducing support for notification bubbles. The feature, still under development, is expected to allow users to keep conversations accessible on screen while using other apps, reducing the need to switch back and forth between windows.
Floating Chats for Better Multitasking
The upcoming functionality is based on Android Notification Bubbles, a system-level feature first introduced by Android 10. It enables apps to display conversations as floating icons, or “bubbles,” that remain visible over other applications. Tapping on these bubbles opens a compact chat window, allowing users to read and reply to messages without leaving their current task.
If implemented as expected, WhatsApp’s version of notification bubbles will function similarly to the chat heads seen in other messaging platforms, offering quick access to ongoing conversations. The bubbles are likely to display the sender’s profile image along with a WhatsApp indicator, making it easy to identify incoming messages at a glance.
Still in Development, Wider Rollout Expected Later
According to early reports, the feature has not yet been released in any beta version of the app, indicating that development is still ongoing. Once ready, it is expected to roll out gradually, beginning with select Android beta users before becoming available more widely.
The feature will likely rely heavily on Android’s native notification system, meaning its performance may vary depending on the device and operating system version. Devices running newer versions of Android, particularly Android 11 and above, are expected to offer smoother integration, while older versions may require additional permissions such as “draw over other apps.”
With this update, WhatsApp appears to be aligning more closely with Android’s built-in multitasking capabilities. The move reflects a broader effort to make messaging faster, more seamless, and less disruptive to users’ workflows.
While there is no official timeline for release, the addition of notification bubbles could enhance everyday communication by keeping conversations easily accessible—without interrupting what users are doing.
