The state plans to boost AI innovation through shared computing infrastructure, major investment targets, dedicated innovation hubs, and Centres of Excellence, positioning Maharashtra as a leading destination for artificial intelligence-driven growth.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has announced a major initiative to strengthen the state’s artificial intelligence ecosystem by providing innovators and startups access to 2,000 Graphics Processing Units (GPUs). The announcement was made during Mumbai Tech Week, where the Chief Minister outlined the government’s vision for accelerating AI-led innovation and entrepreneurship.
Addressing startup founders and technology entrepreneurs, Fadnavis said access to high-performance computing remains one of the biggest barriers for emerging AI companies. To address this challenge, the state government plans to introduce a “compute-as-a-service” model that will allow innovators to access GPU resources without making significant upfront investments in infrastructure. The move is expected to support startups developing and training AI models, enabling them to scale research and product development more efficiently.
Building the foundation for AI innovation
According to Fadnavis, Maharashtra is well-positioned to play a leading role in the AI revolution, supported by a strong startup ecosystem, investor interest, and growing technology capabilities. He noted that Mumbai has emerged as a preferred destination for startups and investors, reinforcing its status as one of the country’s most active innovation hubs.
The GPU initiative forms part of the state’s broader AI policy, which aims to create an enabling environment for technology-driven growth. The government has set ambitious goals that include attracting investments worth ₹10,000 crore and generating approximately 125 lakh employment opportunities through AI-related initiatives and industries.
Focus on infrastructure and research
As part of its long-term strategy, Maharashtra also plans to establish six Centres of Excellence dedicated to artificial intelligence. These centres will focus on research, talent development, innovation, and industry collaboration. In addition, the government intends to create dedicated AI Innovation Regions designed to support the development, testing, and commercialization of AI technologies.
The proposed measures underscore Maharashtra’s efforts to build a comprehensive AI ecosystem by combining infrastructure, investment, research, and startup support, with the objective of making the state a key hub for artificial intelligence development in India.
