OpenAI announced that Codex app users on Windows 11 now have computer use capabilities and ChatGPT mobile app integration. OpenAI first brought computer use capabilities–which lets the AI use the apps, data, and other resources on a PC even when it is not in use – to the Codex app on macOS back in April. It then brought Codex capabilities to the ChatGPT mobile app in May so that users could interact with Codex on desktop (only Mac at the time) while on the go.
“Codex now supports more of the Windows developer loop,” OpenAI tweeted. “With Computer use on Windows, Codex can test apps, debug flows, and review work where your project context lives. Codex in the ChatGPT mobile app lets you connect to Windows machines and keep steering from your phone.”
With this change, these capabilities and some other improvements are now available to Codex users on Windows, too.
On enabling computer use in Codex settings, uses can then use @computer or specific app references (like @Paint) in prompts to have it take over the computer and perform tasks on their behalf. Users can also check in on tasks or fire off new tasks using ChatGPT on iPhone or Android phone.
