At the G7 Summit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and newly elected Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney held pivotal talks, hinting at a fresh chapter in the often-tense India-Canada relationship. This was their first meeting since Carney took office in May 2025.
Modi emphasized the strategic value of bilateral ties, calling for “win-win cooperation” in sectors like trade, energy, clean tech, critical minerals, and fertilizers. Congratulating Carney on his election, he noted strong economic interlinkages, including Canadian investments in India and a large Indian diaspora in Canada. Modi reaffirmed the nations’ shared democratic values and global responsibilities.
Carney, in turn, acknowledged India’s growing global role and its continued presence at the G7 since 2018. He stressed the importance of collaborating on energy transition, AI, and countering transnational threats.
The meeting follows a year of diplomatic strain after allegations surrounding the killing of pro-Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. However, Carney’s invitation to Modi, ongoing diplomatic talks, and plans to appoint new high commissioners point to efforts to mend ties.
With $8.6 billion in goods trade and $14.3 billion in services trade, the stakes are high. This engagement marks Modi's first Canada visit in a decade and could be a turning point in bilateral relations.
