The initiative involves select banks and telecom operators and will run under a regulatory sandbox to assess its operational, technical, and regulatory aspects.
In a major step toward curbing the persistent menace of spam calls and unwanted communications, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has rolled out a pilot Digital Consent Management Platform. Launched in coordination with the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), the initiative marks a significant digital breakthrough aimed at enhancing mobile privacy in India and empowering users with greater control over their data.
This TRAI spam call solution is being tested under a regulatory sandbox, which enables a controlled environment for real-world testing with a limited set of participants. Initially, the pilot involves select telecom operators and banks, who will help evaluate the platform's technical, operational, and regulatory feasibility.
At the core of this TRAI digital initiative is user consent. The platform enables individuals to give, monitor, and revoke consent for receiving promotional messages or service-related calls from businesses. This means consumers will be able to decide how, when, and by whom their personal information is accessed—strengthening both transparency and accountability across communication channels.
TRAI's new platform addresses a growing concern in India, where mobile users are bombarded daily with spam calls, many of which originate from fraudsters or unauthorized telemarketers. According to recent reports, India ranks among the countries with the highest volume of such unsolicited communications, which not only affects user experience but also poses a serious threat to consumer safety.
Beyond telecom, TRAI envisions expanding this digital consent model across various sectors, including banking, e-commerce, insurance, and healthcare. If successful, the platform could serve as a template for future regulations governing data privacy and spam call prevention in India.
Overall, the initiative is a forward-thinking response to evolving digital communication challenges, combining technology, regulatory oversight, and user empowerment to foster a safer and more respectful mobile ecosystem.
