India Tablet Market Gains Momentum
India’s tablet market maintained positive momentum in the second quarter of 2026, shipping 1.1 million units, up 3.4% year-on-year, according to IDC. The growth is particularly notable as worldwide tablet shipments declined sharply during the same period.
The bigger story is the changing nature of demand. Detachable tablets grew 16.5%, while traditional slate tablets declined 3.7%, indicating that buyers increasingly view tablets as productivity devices rather than primarily entertainment screens.
Commercial demand emerged as the key growth engine, expanding 10.1% YoY, while consumer shipments remained broadly flat. Large enterprises recorded particularly strong growth as businesses increased procurement following budget allocations.
Samsung maintained leadership with 29% market share, followed by Lenovo at 23.9%, Xiaomi at 14.2%, Apple at 10.7% and Acer at 8.2%. Samsung benefited from both commercial deployments and its push toward premium, AI-enabled tablets.
Rising component and manufacturing costs, however, remain a concern. Vendors are increasingly moving away from aggressive low-margin volume strategies toward premium devices, detachables and productivity-focused offerings.
This shift could ultimately strengthen the market. Tablets equipped with keyboards, AI capabilities, collaboration tools and enterprise applications are increasingly competing with lightweight notebooks for hybrid-work and education workloads.
India also stands out against the global trend: worldwide tablet shipments fell 12.3% YoY in Q2 2026, according to IDC.
The emerging opportunity is therefore not simply about selling more tablets, but creating greater value per device. Enterprise adoption, AI-led productivity, premiumisation and detachable form factors could define India’s next tablet growth cycle.
