Growth of storage in India
India had always been on a constant growth trajectory. However, over the last 3 to 4 years, the growth has accelerated even further and will continue to do so for the next 5 years. “The primary reasons for this growth are digital transformation of businesses, advent of 3rd platform technologies and rapid digitization of services. This is substantiated with statistics from IDC. In the FY year 2018, the global storage market increased by 7.4% y-o-y, while on the other hand, India storage market grew at 8.8% y-o-y, which is 1.4% higher than the global growth rate,” explains Anupam.
As per IDC, All Flash Arrays (AFA) that witnessed a significant YoY growth of 30.0% in Q4 2018 contributed 27.9% of the overall external storage market. Improved performance vs cost ratio for flash deployments is pushing organizations to consider All Flash Arrays (AFA). Similarly, Hyper Converged Infrastructure (HCI) market is expected to grow over 4X in the next 5 years. MarketsAndMarkets predicts that HCI market size will grow from $4.1 billion in 2018 to $17.1 billion by 2023. Software Defined Storage market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 36.7% between 2016 – 2021, i.e. a growth in market size from $4.7 billion to $22.5 billion. “The growth of these solutions has an indirect impact on the growth of core storage market in India,” points out Anupam.
“We are seeing that the Indian external storage market has been witnessing an increase at a constant rate,” observes Amit. “This is majorly because of the increased investments being made by enterprises across sectors such as BFSI and government services. Continuous innovation enabled by data holds the key today to excel in this competitive environment. Organizations are constantly increasing their expenditure to undertake IT transformation and stay ahead of the competition. With this shift in place, we can expect that there will be an increase in the Indian storage market and it will be placed at a better position than the global storage market.”
Increased spending on storage from organization across verticals such as IT/ITeS, Professional Services, banking, manufacturing, telecommunications and government is thus contributing to the growth. In fact, per IDC, these sectors alone contributed to over 82% of overall market.
Jim states that over 50% of the data stored consists of videos or images. This is expected to continue to grow in the years ahead with advents in video surveillance, corporate video, analytics, media and entertainment, geospatial, and autonomous vehicles. “These, and many other verticals, all have in common the fact that they are generating substantial, record-breaking, amounts of video and rich media. The missions depend upon their data,” he says.
All these factors point to the very fact that India has emerged as an early adopter of technology. Therefore, data growth in India is equal to, or even surpasses, some of the other forward-looking countries.
Furthermore, the government’s Digital India push has led to an increase in the data being generated in the country, forcing the organisations to rapidly look at modernizing their IT infrastructure. The storage capabilities of businesses across verticals are being put to the test in order to derive value from this data.
“Although almost every sector has come under the purview of the Digital Transformation wave, however, the top three key sectors which are contributing the most to the growth of the storage industry include the Government, Professional Services and BSFI. This is mainly because of the continuous technology refresh/capacity expansion, modernization initiatives and investments by these sectors on emerging technologies,” asserts Amit.
As per Oracle’s recent study ‘Rediscovering trust in your data and security’, only 50% of companies in Asia Pacific (APAC) are confident of their data management capabilities. “Interestingly, Indian businesses have more confidence in their data management vis-à-vis their APAC peers,” shares Srikanth Doranadula, Senior Director, Systems Head Business - Oracle India. “India is one of those countries which are confident of their data and security.”
